Excerpt from Defiance of Destiny
She took a deep breath and wiped the sweat from her brow on the sleeve of her
gown.  Her stomach rolled and hot bile filled her mouth.  She had never even killed
an animal and now her actions were about to take her far beyond that.  Her breath
was coming in short raspy gasps making her nostrils flare.  Biting on her lower lip
to stop its trembling she squared her shoulders and eased cautiously to the door
and down the hall.
Momma's door was open a few inches so Diella stopped just before she
reached it.  In the dim light spilling into the hall she checked the weapon in her
hands.  Then she held her breath and listened for any movement that would tell her
where he was in the room.  The soft whisper of the sheets and the clank of ice in
his glass when he set it on the windowsill told her he was on the bed.  A strange
calm settled over her as she raised the shotgun to her shoulder and eased the
door open with her foot.
Dexter had his back to the door as he stubbed out his cigarette in the over
flowing ashtray beside his glass on the windowsill.  He chuckled when he heard
her movements.  "Couldn't wait, could you?  I knew I was right all along 'bout you.
Yore as anxious as me.  Once a woman gets a taste of old Dexter she keeps
coming back for more."  He picked up his drink then turned.  The smirk vanished
from his face and his eyes looked like they would pop right out of his skull.  He
turned pasty white.  "What the hell!"  The glass slipped from his fingers hit the bed
then crashed on the floor leaving a trail of vodka and grapefruit juice in its wake.
Diella stood in the doorway with her legs slightly apart and the gun braced in her
arms.  Her voice was a harsh croak.  "I told you if you ever come near Peggy Lee
I'd kill you.  You should have listened."
